The History of Indian Trail School
The original Indian Trail School was a one room structure erected at the corner of Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road and S. Fork Road across from the Indian Trail Presbyterian Church. The school was funded by local citizens and opened in 1903.
In 1922 the community funded the construction of a new campus at its present day location on Education Road . The school began with eight large classrooms, an auditorium, a community hall, library and office.
By 1926 the school population had grown and space was cramped. The community petitioned the Union County School Board for construction funding.
In 1928 a new two-story high school building addition was erected. The new building contained six classrooms, a laboratory equipped with science apparatus for general science, biology, chemistry and physics, library and a reading room. The school had four hundred students and twelve teachers when the school year began.
In 1928 Mr. V.A. Moore was the principal. Mr. Moore was a graduate of Trinity College in Durham known as Duke University today. The teachers were: Mr. D.S. Davis taught science; Mr. Oscar W. Broom taught English and French; Miss Louise Parker taught history and English; Mr. V.A. Moore taught mathematics; -Miss Leola Plyler taught seventh grade; Miss Ellen Holliday taught sixth grade; Miss Christine Robinson taught fifth grade; Miss Vera Haglier taught forth grade; Mrs. Carolyn Trull taught third grade; Miss Wilma Faires taught second grade; Miss Joyce Tilley taught first grade; and Miss Bertha Connell taught music.
In 1928 there was no electric bell system or intercom. Mr. V.A. Moore relocated a cast iron bell that originally was used on his wife?s (Rena Gaddy Moore) farm in Fayetteville to signal the beginning of the school day ,change of class, lunch and end of the school day. V.A. Moore and his wife, Rena lived in the two story teacher?s residence adjacent to the new High School Building where most of the single teachers boarded. Mrs. Rena Moore was charged with the operation of the teacher?s house.
The school body was a cultural center for the community. Readings, plays, and music programs were prepared for the community and held in the auditorium.
The ninth through the twelfth grades moved to Sun Valley High School in 1963.
In 1975 the sixth through the eight grade students were moved to the Sun Valley Middle School.
The only original building still standing is the auditorium after years of modernization of the campus.
In 2006 the school Principal was Mr. Levi Keith and Assistant Principal, Sherry Richardson. The school enrolment was 702 students during the 2005-06 school year. The school achieved a School of Excellence rating for the 2004-2005 school year.
